Deep and Wide: A Retreat Day Exploring Theological Issues and Models of Developing Interfaith Supports

Resource Presenters:

Thursday, May 24, First Baptist Church of Decatur, Georgia

This is a one day workshop/retreat at the end of the annual national conference of the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. It is an opportunity for members of the Religion and Spirituality Division of AAID and other AAID members meet, network, and reflect with people involved in ministries with people with disabilities and their families in the wider Atlanta area.

Our resource leaders for the day are Dr. Nancy Eiesland, Associate Professor of Sociology of Religion at Candler School of Theology, Emory University, and author of The Disabled God and Human Disability and the Service of God, and numerous articles and chapters on disability theology. She is currently working on a project exploring theology of disability and mothers with disabilities. She will present some of the themes of her writing and current research and thinking, and help us all reflect on theological dimensions of our work.

Mark Crenshaw coordinates an area wide interfaith, interagency program in ministries and faith based supports in the Atlanta area. He will talk about their projects, and some of the lessons learned in working on an interfaith, interagency basis with congregations, agencies, and advocacy groups.

There will plenty of time for discussion, sharing, and networking among participants. AAID members who are doing presentations at the AAID Conference will also bring summaries and resource materials. The day provides a valuable opportunity for participants at a national conference to network with people in the local Atlanta area, and vice versa. The retreat will be followed by a dinner at a local restaurant in Decatur.

Retreat Costs: $25. Dinner costs will be extra.
